The international jury of the 51st annual World Press Photo Contest selected Bulgarian photographer Ivaylo Velev as winner in the sports action singles category. Velev was awarded the price for a photo of freeride competitor Philippe Meier chased by an avalanche.Velev is the first Bulgarian photographer to win a World Press Photo award. The jury gave prises in 10 categories to 59 photographers of 23 nationalities.The World Press Photo of the Year 2007 was awarded to UK photographer Tim Hetherington for a colour photo of a US soldier resting at Restrepo bunker. "This image shows the exhaustion of a man and the exhaustion of a nation," jury chairman Gary Knight said. "We're all connected to this. It's a picture of a man at the end of a line," Knight added.This year, 5019 photographers from 125 countries sent in a total of 80 536 photos, Wolrd Press Photo said.
