Libya Upholds Death Sentences for Bulgarian Nurses

Libya Upholds Death Sentences for Bulgarian Nurses

7/11/2007 11:53:59 AM

Libya's Supreme Court confirmed the death verdicts of the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor, sentenced to death for infecting children with HIV.

The court session continued no more than six minutes.

The Libyan court has also upheld the sentences delivered on the medics for illegal alcohol production and trading and violating the local moral values.

After the expected confirmation of the death verdicts, the final decision is left to the nine-member High Judicial Council, which has the right to revoke the rulings of the court.

The five nurses and a Palestinian doctor, who received Bulgarian citizenship last month, are charged with deliberately infecting 426 Libyan children with HIV in Benghazi hospital.

The medics say they are innocent of giving tainted blood to the children. They argue that poor hygiene was to blame for the infections.

The six medics were found guilty and sentenced to death twice, first in 2004 and again in 2006 following a court appeal. It was their final appeal in the case which has gripped public attention in both Libya and Bulgaria and sparked a public outcry across the European Union and the United States.
