The Maritsa River could become navigable as it once was. Phil Filipov, a Bulgarian immigrant to the USA, suggested the idea a couple of years ago and it was now brought back to life by businessmen from Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second largest city, which lies along the Maritsa, during a conference of the National Tourism Board on Wednesday. The Maritsa Hotel owner Vetko Arabadjiev believes the eleven-kilometer-long section of the river running through Plovdiv could become an attractive sight for tourists if yachts and boats sail there. On both banks there are many suitable places for restaurants and recreation facilities.
To make the river navigable, the riverbed had to be cleaned, alluvium cleared and dykes built. Abadjiev believes the investment can be provided by a public-private company. Within three months he will officially make an offer for the establishment of a public-private partnership in Plovdiv Municipal Council. He intends to form a working group including experts from the Municipality because the river is exclusive property and the state will have the decisive say in the project.
