100th anniversary of the birth of Elias Canetti (1905 ? 1994)

Plovdiv celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Bulgarian-born writer of Jewish origin Elias Canetti, by an exhibition in one of the halls of the Plovdiv City Art Gallery, located in the Old Town, at 1 Artin Gidikov Street, phone +359 32 628 745; working hours: 9 am ? 5.30 pm. The exhibition closes July 31st, 2005 (this Sunday).

 

The exhibition is dedicated to Elias Canetti, who was born in Rousse 100 years ago and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981. It features a collage, computer graphics, paintings and installations, all visualizing different excerpts from his book DIE FACKEL IM OHR, translated as The Torch in My Ear (1980).

 

The art works are all placed in screen-looking wooden frames resembling an open book. Artists from Bulgaria, Austria, Serbia and Montenegro participate in the exhibition. Among the BG artists one can see the names of Andrey Daniel, Ivaylo Mirchev, Vihroni Popnedelev, Svilen Blazhev, Dimiter Cholakov, Branko Nikolov, the Plovdiv school representatives Monika Romenska and Yanko Nenov.
