Bulgaria marks 100th birth anniversary of world famous sculptor Assen Peykov

A national celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of world famous sculptor Assen Peykov is being held in Sevlievo, Northern Bulgaria. A retrospective exhibition is staged. Some 50 works from Peykov’s Bulgarian and Italian periods are on display. Assen Peykov graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia and at the age of 29 left Bulgaria. He lived in Paris, Madrid and the United States and at the end of the 1930s settled permanently in Rome and became one of the leading figures of Italian sculpture art. He made over a thousand sculpture portraits from bronze, stone and marble mainly of well known statesmen, politicians, actors and writers. John Kennedy, Sofia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Eva Gardner, Pope Pius XII, to mention but a few Peykov is also author of the Leonardo Da Vinci statue outside Fuimicino Airport in Rome.
