Bulgaria may merge Burgas, Varna airport co's with Plovdiv airport

1/9/2007 10:01:35 AM

The assets of state-owned companies Airport Varna and Airport Burgas left after the airports themselves were signed over for management under a concession arrangement may be merged with the Airport Plovdiv company, Dnevnik learned from transport minister Petar Mutafchiev.

The assets comprise mainly office and jet handling equipment.

A concession procedure for the Plovdiv airport is not likely to begin any time soon due to on ongoing dispute with Swiss-registered Tado over the ownership of the passenger terminal. The transport will propose to buy the terminal from Tado or swap it for a plot of land. If the offer is rejected, the future concessionaire may be required to build a new one.

The merger of the airport companies with the Plovdiv airport will allow the airport charges collected by the two coastal airports to be invested in the Plovdiv facility, said Mutafchiev.

Another option for the development of the airport companies is to function as secondary operators of the respective airport after it reaches a traffic of 2 mln.
