Georgi Asparuhov – Gundi, is one of the legends of Bulgarian football. He was born on 4 May 1943 in Sofia. Gundi was 17-years old when he started his professional carrier, debuting for the team of Levski. From 1959 to 1971 he played 11 seasons on Gerena (Levski’s club stadium).

Gundi was Championship winner of Bulgaria for 3 times, and also won the Cup of Bulgaria twice. In 1965 he was chosen as the top football player in Bulgaria. In the same year Gundi was ranked 8th in the Golden ball chart. Georgi Asparuhov played 50 international appearances for Bulgaria, scoring 19 goals including Bulgaria's only ever goal against England at Wembley in a 1-1 draw in 1968.

Gundi died in a furious car accident along with his Levski teammate Nikola Kotkov on 30 June 1971. The funeral of the two football players gathered thousands of grieved people. Even 35 years after his death Gundi is still an admired idol of Bulgarians. Asparuhov's place in Bulgarian football history was underlined in 2000 when the striker was voted Bulgarian Player of the 20th Century. Today Levski’s club stadium is named after Georgi Asparuhov.
