Panagyurishte Golden Treasure to be kept in the Plovdiv Archaeology Museum

1/9/2008 2:09:31 PM

Panagyurishte Golden Treasure is expected to be given back to the Plovdiv Archaeological Museum, where it once belonged. Its current place in the National History Museum in Sofia will be taken by replicas of the treasure utensils. The Treasure has been exhibited 5 times in Paris only but not once in Plovdiv so far.

The Treasure, uncovered in 1949, was expropriated from the Plovdiv museum by decision of the then communist government in 1974, due to lack of suitable premises in the Plovdiv museum. Now, the Plovdiv Archaeological Museum is fully restored to receive back the treasure.

The seven 24-carat-gold utensils, the amphora and the phiala will be coming home at the end of the year - after the scheduled exhibitions in Japan, Monaco and Germany.
