The Holocaust victims were commemorated at the Plovdiv Jewish Monument of Gratitude. The monument has been erected at the very place where in 1942 the Plovdiv Metropolitan Kiril met the detained 1,500 Jews to tell them that Bulgaria would never allow their deportaion to a concentration camp.
"We shall never forget that Bulgaria was be the only country during WW2 to save the lives of its 50,000 Jewish citizens", said the former Israel Ambassador to Bulgaria, Mr.Emanuel Zissman, in his speech.
