Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ
8/6/2012 7:43:00 AM
August 6th, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to the legend, that day Jesus Christ strengthens the belief of his disciples in his holy origin by transfiguring himself in front of the eyes of Peter, Jacob and John.
Transfiguration starts fifty days of fasting (fish is allowed). That day people pick the first grapes and give it out to relatives and neighbors. According to the folklore beliefs, that day the “summer twists itself” and starts approaching the autumn and, respectively, the cold.
