Nikolay Haitov (1919 - 2002)

Academician. One of the best Bulgarian writers. Born in the Rhodope Mountain village of Yavrovo. Author of many novels and short stories. Screenplay-writer of wonderful films (Koziat Rog, i.e. Goats Horn).  Chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Writers (1993-99). Winner of numerous literary awards.

Haitov was a man of a clear-cut stands and defending his point seemed like the most important thing to him. That is the impression the reader gets from his autobiographical book of memories Through Sieve And Riddle (Sluntze Publishing House), too. With each and every episode, no matter how eloquent the author might have been, he would always ardently defend an idea, a fact, or a person.

Haitov will definitely be remembered by his research study of Levski and the nonexistent grave of the eminent revolutionary. A disputable person in his lifetime, Nikolay Haitov has always remained extremely respected for the literary treasure he left behind. The unique Rhodope mountain figures he created, stepped into a life of their own.

Nikolay Haitovs works have been translated into 28 languages and are considered landmarks of Bulgarian literature.
