Regional and town departments - the region of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Plovdiv is the administrative and economic center of Plovdiv Region, which comprises 17 municipalities: Plovdiv, Assenovgrad, Karlovo, Maritza, Rodopi, Hissar, Parvomay, Stamboliiski, Krichim, Perushtitza, Sadovo, Laki, Rakovski, Bresovo, Saedinenie, Kaloyanovo, Kouklen The Plovdiv Region covers 1/7 of the arable land in Bulgaria and 12% of the durable tangible assets. Along with the advanced industrial sector, Plovdiv Region provides excellent conditions for the development of diversified agriculture and stockbreeding.

1. Assenovgrad Municipality

The municipality occupies the southeast part of the District of Plovdiv. It is situated along the two banks of the Assenitsa (Chepelarska, Chaya) River. It covers a small part of the Thracian Lowland to the north, and encompasses spacious areas of the Rhodope Mountains to the south, as a result of which a substantial part of the terrain is strongly indented and inclined. The municipality's territory is 615 sq. km. That constitutes 10.3% of the District of Plovdiv's territory and 0.55% of the country's territory. It borders the municipalities of Rodopi, Laki, Banite, Parvomay and Sadovo. The municipal centre -Assenovgrad - is the largest town n the Rhodopes and the second largest in the District of Plovdiv, with a population of 52 000 people. It is situated at the foot of the mountain at an altitude above sea level about 220 m and is 19 km away from the town of Plovdiv, 85 km away from the town of Smolyan and about 180 km away from the capital Sofia. There are 26 settlements in the Assenovgrad municipality - one town and 25 villages. The municipality's settlement network is uneven and the population is concentrated in the town and on less than 1/2 of the municipality's total territory. Almost all larger settlements are situated in the plain. About 71 000 inhabitants live in them, which constitutes over 96% of the municipality's total population. There are twelve villages in the mountain.

2. Brezovo Municipality

The Brezovo Municipality includes the following villages and small towns: Brezovo, Choba, Babek, Borets, Vurben, Drangovo, Zelenikovo, Zlatosel, Otets Kirilovo, Pudarsko, Rozovets, Svezhen, Streltsi, Surnegor, Turkmen, Chehlare. The Brezovo Municipality is located in the north-eastern part of the Plovdiv Region area, and covers an area of 465 sq.km. The arable land of the municipality amounts to 266 437 decares. There are 15 agricultural cooperation associations registered according to the Cooperation Law, on the territory of the Brezovo Municipality. The rest part of the land is run by private agricultural owners or associations of owners. There are three tourist mountain hostels with 230 total number of beds, the best one being the Bratan Hostel, situated in the foot of the Bratan peak in the Rhodope Mountains. The population of the Brezovo Municipality is 8957, according to the March 2001 census. The unemployment rate is quite high – for the year 2001 it runs between 23 and 25%.

3. Hissar Municipality

Hissar is situated in a small valley at the southeast foot of "Sredna Gora" mountain. The first record about town formations dates back from 4-3 century BC. The town set up before 17 centuries from the Roman emperor Diocletian, who had settled down here because of the precious mineral water. Trough the years here have settled down Thracians, Romans, Slavs, proto-Bulgarian - all attracted by the unique combination of mineral springs, climate, natural facts and local flora and fauna. area : 526 км2, altitude : 336 м, population : 16 800, settlements : 12, springs : 22 The numerous thermal springs on the area of the resort of Hissar belong to one and the same field which borders probably are far wide than the noticeable thermal zone. They belong to the group of Srednogorski mineral springs, which have been a zone of lively volcanic action. The thermal field of Hissar consists of 22 springs, from which 6 are obtained from deep drillings. The temperature of the springs varies from 40 0C to 52 0C. The hottest are "Parilkite" and "Momina banya". The occupied population in the municipality consists of 6,735 men and woman. There are about 790 of registered in the Municipality. About 90% of them alone-man firms with 1-2 people staff. The firms with large staff are about 15. As a national resort during the least decades in Hissar and the municipality have developed few branches of industry. Predominant are the small and medium-sized firms and enterprises with different kind of private property.

4. Kaloyanovo Municipality

The Kaloyanovo Municipality includes the following villages and small towns: Kaloyanovo, Begovo, Glavatar, Gorna Mahala, Dolna Mahala, Duvanlii, Dalgo Pole, Zhitnitsa, Ivan Vazovo, Otets Paisievo, Pesnopoy, Ruzhevo, Ruzhevo Konare, Souhozem, Chernozem. The municipality was founded in 1979. It is located in the northern part of the Thracian Valley, on an area of 347 sq.km. Administrative center is a village with a population of 2700 people. The Kaloyanovo Municipality has the following municipalities as its boundaries: Hissar, Karlovo, Suedinenie, Rakovski, Brezovo and Maritsa. Defining role is in its economics is attributed to agriculture – grain crops and essential-oil crops, vegetables, sheep and cattle breeding. Among the industries, mostly presented by privately owned small-size companies, leather goods and garment production, as well as fruit, vegetable and herb processing industries deserve mentioning.

5. Karlovo Municipality

The municipality is situated in a valley surrounded by the highest part of the Balkan Mountain (the Troyan's Balkan and the Kalofer's Balkan) to the north, Central Sredna Gora to the southeast and the mountain treshold of Koznitsa to the west. It is on the border with Pavel Banya municipality to the east, Apriltsi, Troyan and Teteven - to the north, Pirdop - to the south, Koprivshtitsa - to the southwest, Hisar - to the south and Bresovo - to the south-west. The territory of the municipality is 1089.154 sq.m. The town of Karlovo is the main town of the municipality – the third largest town of the region with 27 000 inhabitants. It is 56 km away from Plovdiv and has good road and railway connections. The Karlovo municipality includes another three towns - Kalofer, Klisura and Sopot and 26 villages (2 of which are neighborhood parts of Karlovo and one - of Sopot). Only four villages have less than 500 people population.
