More than 30 past and present world leaders, including Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, took part in the celebrations of the 20th year since the fall of the Berlin Wall in the German capital.

The leaders who included UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton participated in the ceremony in which a replica of the infamous wall was torn down in a repetition of the event of from November 9, 1989.

Former top world leaders such as former US chief diplomat Henry Kissinger, ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, and Polish ex-President Lech Walesa were also among the top guests.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, who was working as a scientific researcher in East Berlin at the time, described the the fall of the Wall as “the happiest day in recent Germany history”.

"Sometimes people forget today how many could not leave (the country) for years, how many sat in prisons ... before the joy of freedom came, many people suffered," Chancellor Merkel reminded.

"Naturally, we can't forget that the fall of the wall was prepared by what happened in the Soviet Union. These changes brought advantages to all of Europe," said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

US President Barack Obama also addressed the people of Berlin and the whole world in a surprise video message introduced by Hillary Clinton.

"Nov. 9, 1989 will always be remembered and cherished in the United States. Like so many Americans, I'll never forget the images of people tearing down the wall. There could be no clearer rebuke of tyranny, there could be no stronger affirmation of freedom," Obama declared.
