Bulgaria Mourns Hellish Bus Crash Victims

Bulgaria has declared Friday an official day of mourning in honour of the sixteen people who were killed in a bus crash in south-eastern Bulgaria.

A bus careered down a mountainside called Bakadzhik Peak and plowed through a crowd of pedestrians heading to a religious festival in southeastern Bulgaria Thursday, killing at least 16 people and injuring at least 20.

Police said the bus had failed to pull over due to a technical problem.

The accident happened near the site of a local fair crowded with people who were celebrating Orthodox Ascension Day.

Sofia City Hall canceled all events planned for Friday, including the street performance of the French Theatrical Troupe "Fair of the Flying Heart", scheduled to take place at 9:30 pm on the square in front of the "Alexander Nevski" cathedral.

The performance was organized by the City Hal, the Culture Institute at the Foreign Ministry and the French Institute in Sofia to mark June 1 - Day of the Child and the 130th anniversary of declaring Sofia capital of Bulgaria.

All Thursday events to celebrated Ascension or Spasovden were also canceled.

In addition, the visit of the "Musical Idol 3" contestants in the Serbian town of Bosilegrad was also put off. The young talents were scheduled to perform for the Bulgarian community in the area.
