Bulgaria Marks Apostle of Freedom's Hanging Anniversary

Commemorative ceremonies on the occasion of the 134th anniversary from the hanging of Bulgaria's Apostle of Freedom Vassil Levski will be hold all over the country on Monday.

A rally, which will force some changes in public transport's routes, is to take place in the capital. It will end at the Apostle's monument, where a speech about his life and great deed will be delivered by the historian Bojidar Dimitrov.

A pilgrimage to Levski's monument will take place in his hometown of Karlovo. After a rally to his house, wreaths will be laid also in front of the monument of Apostle's mother Ghina Kuncheva.

Dirges and commemorative rallies will be held also in the towns of Plovdiv, Vidin, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven and Lovech.

At the hard times, when Bulgaria was under Turkish slavery, Vassil Levski set up a revolutionary network all over Bulgaria.

He established numerous revolutionary committees and started preparing the people for a general uprising. Levski was betrayed and captured by the Turks in late 1872 and was executed after a trial on February 18, 1873 as strong public resentment was feared.
