The 105th anniversary of the birth of the first Bulgarian to become a catholic saint



The Bulgarian bishop Evgenij Bossilkov was officially declared as beatific on May 15th, 1998, by Pope John Pall II, at a formal ceremony at the St Peter?s Cathedral in Rome, and is in process of being declared a catholic saint.

 

Father Bossilkov was the first BG catholic priest canonized by the Holy Pope. He became a martyr of faith after he has been arrested, tortured, ?sentenced to death? and executed by the communist authorities in 1952. He is believe to have been killed in the early hours of November 12th, 1952, but the place of his remains is still unknown? His relatives heard of the execution about a week after it, when his niece took a basket of food for him. The basket was returned to her together with some of his clothing, pieces of which are preserved today in hundreds of BG catholic families as valuable relics....
