The decision of the Culture and Tourism Commission with the Mayor’s Consultative Council

After careful considerations of the idea for erecting a monument to Tsar Simeon the Great on the Dzhendem Tepe Hill or somewhere in the city center – the Commission came out with a final opinion. According to the Commission, a wider public debate is needed before creating that monument, which is aimed to become a dominating symbol of our city for decades to come.

Although one of the greatest BG tsars of all times, Tsar Simeon the Great had no real connection with the then-history of the city. The Commission would like the large public to participate more actively in the debates and considers even the choice of the sculptor that has already been made, as not final and open for debates.

Plovdiv Today is result of the lives of its thousands of citizens throughout the centuries so its contemporary citizens need to have their say in choosing a symbol of Plovdiv today, was the Commission’s opinion.
