In these post-election days in Bulgaria, we are remebering the words of the great freedom fighter Vassil Levski, 136 years after his death:
- Everyone who has dedicated their lives to the freedom of their homeland should forget their own good and expect nothing in return;
- they should be honest and self-sacrificing;
- they should always be on the alert whenever they see evil coming towards the nation and its people and take the right actions;
- they should always work hard and even harder;
- they should take no personal interest in that work and keep perfect book keeping when it comes to public money matters;
- If one gets to die while doing that job - it will be a death of honor and they should be brave enough to meet death standing up; their names will be remembered forever and known even by the great great grandchildren of their contemporaries; their death has not been in vain and their sacrifice has been greatly worth while;
- the pleasure that one can take from working for their nation is incompararble to any profit or personal benefit one might get in life...
Let us hope our politicians have read Levski's thoughts on public service and will try to implement at least some of them successfully...
